21 SAVAGE: Absence Looms OverGrammys

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Before the awards, Post made an Instagram call to action to raise awareness about 21’s situation. That made a lot of folks think he was going to do more.
  • Even if he has opposing political views, he should have stood in solidarity with his collaborator.
  • The pictures of him wearing the shirt backstage make me wonder if he planned to reveal it on the air and wound up getting cold feet.
  • Maybe it was under his jacket but the zipper got stuck.

A week after the Atlanta rapper was arrested by ICE, his “Rockstar” collaborator didn’t even make reference to him on stage. Post Malone didn’t say a thing during his five minutes of airtime on Music’s Biggest Night. He apparently wore a “Free 21 Savage” t-shirt backstage, which was only seen in pictures after the fact.

When Swedish musician Ludwig Gorranns son accepted the Record of the Year award on Childish Gambino ’s behalf, he was the first to address Savage’s situation on air. The camera cut to Posty who was sitting in the crowd, clapping.

According to Savage’s co-manager, Grammys producers refused to release tickets to Savage’s mom so she could attend the awards on his behalf. That’s extra awkward considering producers apparently flew Mac Miller ’s parents out to be in the crowd. Still, Meezy wrote, “I won’t blame this on race… I blame it on lame people being LAME.”

Before the show, demonstrators outside the Staples Center made a statement by holding up poster boards spelling out “Free 21 Savage.”
