HURRICANE MARIA: Puerto Rico Powerless as She Moves On

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • One video shows two tethered horses up to their necks in flood waters.
  • FEMA will do everything it can, but it's not like Harvey or Irma, where they can just truck in supplies.
  • Meanwhile, Jose just sits there off the New England coast.

Puerto Ricans are waking up to an apocalyptic landscape in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

The island's entire electricity grid is offline, and some reports say it could take four to six months to restore power. Meanwhile, widespread flooding continues as the storm's outer rain bands continue to dump water, even though Maria's eye has moved northwest. A 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. island-wide curfew is in effect.

The storm's death toll stands at 17, according to the New York Times -- 14 on the island nation of Dominica, one on the French island of Guadalupe and one in Puerto Rico. However, Puerto Rican officials expect that number to climb.

Maria now packs 115-mile-per-hour winds, making it a category 3 storm. The eye will pass to the northeast of the Dominican Republic today (Thursday). Forecasters are becoming increasingly confident that after that, it will track out to sea and not hit the continental United States.
